Spoken predominantly in Sweden by over 8.5 million people, the Swedish language is one of four major languages used in Scandinavia (the others are Norwegian, Danish and Finnish). It is little known that it’s also an official language of Finland and that it is widely used in Norway and Estonia, adding nearly half a million speakers. Swedish is a Germanic language belonging to the Indo-European family of languages. It is a descendant of Old Norse, but its current form is related to a modern dialect that arose in the early 16th century.

The spoken and written forms of Swedish can vary widely due to the use of special inflections used in the written form. Within Sweden two spoken dialects predominate—a northern dialect (Svea) and a southern variant (Göta). However, local dialects abound and are far more distinct than American dialects of English. The literacy rate in Sweden is 99% with a high level of English fluency among the general population.

History of the Swedish Language

The Swedish language underwent many changes in the Middle Ages and underwent standardization in the 1500’s. Major historical events had a direct impact on the Swedish language: independence from Denmark, the Reformation, and publication of the Swedish Bible and formation of the Swedish Academy in 1786. In the Middle Ages, Swedish was influenced by Low German, followed by High German during the 16th and 17th centuries. French had a major impact during the 1700’s. Throughout the 20th century, English loan words have been heavily incorporated into daily usage.
