Greek is the official language of Greece and one of the official languages of Cyprus.

Greek has its own branch of the Indo-European language family.

History of the Greek Language
Greek has been spoken since the second millennium BC. The earliest evidence of it being
written is from about 1400 BC, appearing on tablets on the island of Crete. The alphabet
used is different from the current Greek alphabet, but since the new alphabet’s inception,
it has remained relatively unchanged. It is one of the oldest recorded living languages today.
The Greek language is typically divided into five periods: Mycenaean, Classical,
Hellenistic, Medieval and Modern. These periods tend to denote shifts and changes in the language;
however, most speakers of the current form of Greek, Standard Modern Greek can understand the version
of Greek used to write the New Testament and the Septuagint.
Despite the relatively little change in the Greek language over time, there are two main
dialects present today —one is the historical dialect of Greek, while the other is the current official
Greek used today. Other dialects also exist based on region and area.

The Greek language uses the Greek alphabet to write. It also has several diacritical marks,
including the acute accent, the grave accent, the circumflex accent and tilde. Prior to their presidential
abolition in 1982, Greek also included breathing marks which showed aspiration. It was also the first alphabet
to include vowels.
