Introduction

If your company is considering entering international markets or undertaking expansion in markets where you are already making sales, I cannot think of a better time to raise the level of commitment. The weak US dollar can be a bit unnerving (who is a champion of weakness!), but for US exporters it is a golden opportunity to be noticed by overseas buyers and increase market share.

Trade shows are one of the best ways to establish a foothold in new markets. Where else can you meet face-to-face with hundreds or even thousands of potential customers all within a matter of days? Regardless of your industry sector, there is a trade show somewhere in the world where you belong. Our newsletter this month is a wonderful primer into why trade shows are effective marketing. We also give you a head start (thanks to our friends at the USDOC) in finding the right trade show for your company.

We urge you to pursue new markets. Don’t just wait for your next international sale to fall into your lap!

All the best in ’05!

Scott Bass
President

The Importance of International Trade Shows ...back to index...

Whether you are an up-and-coming business, or one that has been long established, you know that there is no better way to get your company’s name into the business world than participating in an industry trade show. Statistics show that on average, 14% of annual marketing budgets are spent on trade shows alone. In addition, 59% of trade show attendees plan to buy within the next year as a result of their attendance. There is no doubt that trade shows can be a major source of revenue. But, are there enough trade shows available?

Some businesses are satisfied with the limited selection of trade shows hosted within the United States. What those businesses might be overlooking is the fact that many of the major trade shows are hosted outside the country. The Hong Kong Toy’s and Games Fair is the second largest fair of its kind in the world and includes seven group pavilions from around the world. The 2005 Ambiente Fair in Frankfurt, Germany, also called “The World’s Largest Consumer Affair,” expects over 5,000 exhibitors this year. In addition, Medica, the world’s largest medical fair, in Duesseldorf, Germany, expects 4,038 exhibitors from a total of 67 different nations. These are only a few examples. The truth is that sometimes to find the most appropriate and profitable trade show for your company, you are going to have to look outside the US. Of course, preparing a promotional stand in another country might be demanding.

Research shows that an attendee will stop at roughly 35 booths during a business and industry trade show. So, if your business is exhibiting at a show that has 500 booths, it will be unlikely that the majority of attendees will take the time to survey your booth. It will be especially unlikely in a foreign setting, if the booths surrounding yours are all in the suitable language, and yours is not. Clearly you have to take action.

Fortunately, Advance Language Translation will be able to give you the edge you need in this somewhat untapped market. By giving you a precise and impressive translation, ALT inc. will be able to help your company attract new clients and broaden your business beyond the horizons of the US market. With this whole new realm of clientele, there’s no telling how much your business will grow.

USDOC Certified International Shows ...back to index...

The United State Department of Commerce (USDOC) offers many programs to help US exporters promote themselves internationally. On their website: www.export.gov they offer information on international trade events, based domestically and internationally.

International expos that have been qualified and certified by USDOC are listed online under Trade Events. This certification may also be a helpful guide for you as to which trade shows may yield good exposure for you in your industry.

USDOC’s domestic trade show listing references expos that attract a large international presence. If your travel budget restrains you from attending or exhibiting at the foreign trade shows you desire, you may want to consider some of the domestic shows referenced. Even if you just walk the show to assess its value, you can visit international booths and the US Pavilion, which acts as a magnet for international visitors and buyers also walking the show.

Whether you attend a domestic or foreign-based international trade show, remember: the vital first impression is reinforced with translated materials. Consider a bilingual business card, a simple flyer or website localization to demonstrate your sincere commitment to working with these prospective worldwide customers.

For easy reference, a summary of USDOC certified shows are listed here. To obtain specific contact information for each show, visit USDOC’s site at: http://www.export.gov/comm_svc/ibp.asp?ReportID=TFC
