Advanced Language has had several honors bestowed upon us of late, and we take great pleasure in sharing these with you:

How to Choose a Translation Services Company

Does Your Translation Source Have What It Takes?

When translating your corporate website, brochures, videos, manuals or business proposals into a foreign language, you need to choose a professional full-service translation company to handle the work...but, how do you make that choice?

  • Does your translation supplier have the capabilities to work in the languages you're likely to need?

  • Is the translation source truly a single-source supplier, handling all language needs from translation through final delivery?

  • Has the translation service provider properly evaluated its translators BEFORE they work on your project?

  • Are the translators native speakers of the target languages?

  • Do all the translators have technical expertise?

  • What are the quality control mechanisms this translation supplier has in place to assure seamless delivery of your project?

  • How will you know the costs on each project? Will the translation supplier provide a firm quote?

  • Who will be the contact at your translation supplier?

  • Are references available regarding the quality of the translation supplier's work?

  • Does your translation source offer a written warranty? If so, for what period of time?

What can a professional, full-service translation company do for you?

Most companies exporting their products to non-English speaking countries need translations into more than one language. Once you've selected your translation company, you should expect them to provide you with high-quality translations in a variety of languages.

For example, to produce your sales literature in four languages, your professional translation company will start with your English brochure and choose an appropriate team for each of the languages. The team will consist of four people for each language: a translator, an editor, a desktop publisher and a proofreader.

The translator's job is to customize text to suit the country you're targeting. Every language will be done by a different translator; each is a native speaker of the language into which the materials are to be translated. The translations will be localized for nuances and culture of the target countries.

After translation is complete, your translation provider will review and edit the work. This stage is to ensure that the translation meets the quality standards you expect and to be certain the text does not sound like a translation.

Your translation is now ready for production. Each foreign language will be desktop published or typeset and proofread by another linguist who will look for typographical errors and missing text. This procedure is equivalent to how your company would proofread the typeset English before printing.

After the translation company has completed these quality checks, the materials are delivered to you.

Translators will have been tested before working on any client projects to assure they have the deep knowledge of their native language and of English that's required to make a good translation. They'll have a real understanding of American culture as well as their own through living in both countries for extended periods of time and through visiting their native countries often.

You'll know the quality of the company's work because they'll back it with a warranty!

An individual translator you might hire cannot be equipped to take your translation beyond a raw manuscript. Just as with your original documentation, your translation needs to be edited, desktop published, proofread, and output into the final format, which you stipulate. This requires the services of a professional company that can bring together all the people necessary to get the job done to your specifications. The job of your translation company is to be the single source for all your foreign language communication needs.

Why not just find a translator and “cut out” the middleman?

A translation firm is not a middleman, but rather a team of experienced professionals committed to your success!

The Internet can put you in touch instantly with translators around the world...or at least with people who call themselves translators.

Your documentation was created by professionals then reviewed by your engineering, technical writing, and legal departments-perhaps even by your top management-to make it perfect.

Why would you do any less with the foreign language versions?

When you choose a translator from the Internet to work on your foreign language communications project, you have little knowledge of his or her language and technical capabilities. You don't know what experience he has, whether he/she works at this part time, has been out of his country for years making his native language stale, or if you'll get what you require.

Do they offer written warranties? Very doubtful. You'll get what they give you and you'll have no recourse if things go sour.

A good professional translation company, on the other hand, has a pool of professionals from whom to choose the right team for your job.

Professional translators know only to translate into their native language. A reliable translation company controls this and only allows native speakers of a language to translate into that language. By maintaining a network of professional translators, the translation company can assemble a team with the technical expertise and linguistic specialty for each language you need.

We pride ourselves at Advanced Language Translation Inc. on seeing every project as a team effort --from our quote, including our 180-day warranty, well past the delivery of your final translated project. When you choose Advanced Language Translation, you've made the right choice:

Globalization Step-by-Step

Do you have a software product that could bring more revenue if sold internationally?
If so, we recommend that you read more about issues surrounding software internationalization, localization and globalization. Microsoft’s web site has an excellent tutorial at:
http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/getwr/steps/wrguide.mspx

This site not only gives an effective description of terminology, but also outlines what it takes to globalize an application and get you headed in the right direction!

Supporting International Web Customers

If you are considering global sales as a means to diversifying your business, consider globalizing your web site. Advanced Language Translation President, Scott Bass, had the pleasure to present to the eBusiness Association recently, regarding “Website Localization”. Scott outlined how companies should enhance their web site to attract foreign inquiries and make it a powerful international marketing tool.

Keep the following in mind when planning your global web strategy:

  • Design an international web site, beginning with building your English web site so it can easily be localized.

  • How can you improve your company's "find-ability" internationally on the web.

  • If you build it, they might come: how will you support your international web customers.
